Do you own your own body?
" Of course I own my own body" We hear you say.
"I can get it tattooed. I can pierce it. I can make it fat or thin. It's my body and I can do what I like with it."
Well, yes you can do those things but as a matter of law you do not own your own body.
For example you can not sell it for prostitution or slavery. You can not destroy it. Whilst suicide is no longer a crime, attempting suicide or encouraging someone to commit suicide, is an offence.
However, science and medicine are beginning to challenge the basic rule.
In the case of Yearworth v NHS Bristol NHS (2009) a group of cancer suffering men, claimed that they had psychiatric injury upon learning that the sperm that they had deposited for safe keeping with the defendants had been damaged.
The Courts decided that they had kept ownership of their sperm.
